Beyond Text: The Engineering Behind Seamless AI Manga Typesetting
Why translating comics is an image-processing challenge, not just a language one.

Most people think building an AI Manga Translator is just about "OCR + Google Translate." As a full-stack dev with 17 years of experience, I can tell you: the real battle is fought in the pixels, not just the strings.
When I was building AI Manga Translator, the biggest hurdle wasn't the translation—it was the Typesetting.
The "Ugly" Reality of Generic AI If you’ve ever used a generic translation app on a comic, you’ve seen the mess:
Text overlapping the character's face.
Horizontal English sentences crammed into narrow, vertical Chinese bubbles.
Zero respect for the original art's aesthetic.
To solve this for Manga, Manhua, and Manhwa, I had to engineer a pipeline that treats typesetting as a first-class citizen.
The Challenge of Vertical-to-Horizontal Transition East Asian comics (especially Manhua and Manga) rely heavily on vertical text. English is horizontal.
The Engineering: We don't just paste text. Our engine calculates the Bounding Box of the original bubble and uses a dynamic word-wrap algorithm to determine the optimal font size and line height. The goal? Zero overflow.
Intelligent In-painting (The "Cleaner" Move) You can’t just slap white boxes over the original text—it destroys the art.
The Tech: We use a specialized in-painting model to "heal" the background. If a character’s hair or a complex texture was behind the text, the AI restores it before the new English text is typeset. This ensures the comic looks like it was originally drawn for an English audience.
Handling 20+ Languages Typesetting for English is one thing; doing it for German (long words) or Spanish (expressive phrases) is another.
The Solution: Our system uses a Recursive Fitting Algorithm. If the translated text doesn't fit the bubble at a readable font size, the system intelligently adjusts the leading and tracking or, in extreme cases, slightly expands the text area without clipping the art.
The Stack Behind the Magic Built with Next.js 14, our backend handles these heavy image-processing tasks using specialized OCR and In-painting models, ensuring that even with 20+ supported languages, the latency remains low for the user.
Indie hacking is about solving real-world friction with elegant engineering. For me, it’s about making sure that whether you’re reading a Xianxia epic or a classic Shonen manga, the technology disappears, leaving only the story.
